Joseph Eschenberg’s work asks us to look twice.

Across four distinct bodies of work, the familiar is repeatedly disrupted. Communication fractures. DNA becomes a language of identity and difference. Symbols of worship and belief are pulled into the present. Memories and discarded objects surface in unexpected forms. What initially appears recognizable rarely remains that way.

Working across mixed media and assemblage, Eschenberg builds from materials that already carry a history. Found objects, industrial remnants, textured surfaces, paint and familiar imagery collide within compositions that move between order and disorder, beauty and unease. Nothing feels accidental, yet the work retains the unpredictability of things brought together that were never intended to coexist.

Each series approaches a different question. Sound of Silence considers communication and disconnection in a world overwhelmed by noise. Variant turns toward biology, individuality and the imperfections that make us human. Neon God examines worship, iconography and the shifting values we attach to cultural and spiritual symbols. The White Series moves into the less tangible territory of memory and dreams, where fragments of ordinary life are transformed and given new significance.

Together, these works reveal an artist interested not simply in what things are, but in what they can become. Eschenberg takes what is overlooked, familiar or discarded and changes its context, asking the viewer to reconsider meaning, value and their own assumptions about what they are seeing.

In the intimacy of the Bank Art Gallery vault, that experience becomes even more concentrated. These are works meant to be approached closely, discovered slowly and returned to more than once.

For collectors, Eschenberg’s work offers something that continues beyond the first encounter, revealing new relationships, details and meaning over time. To live with one of these works is to continue that discovery.
