An imagined archaeological figure from an ongoing future mythology, Corporal 199 explores a world in which biology and technology have become intertwined. Created by Janice Mauro in collaboration with Joanne Pagano Weber, the sculpture is part of a larger narrative examining environmental change, resource depletion and humanity’s relationship with technology.

About the Piece
This piece began as a fiberglass store mannequin and, through laborious carving with saws and files, was transformed into a masculine robotic creature from the future. Objects from computer interiors are embedded into the body, suggesting a future state in which biology and technology are fused. The helmet, fabricated from dense foam, adds mystery and a touch of humor.
About the Artists
Janice Mauro
Janice Mauro is a sculptor and member of the National Sculpture Society, Silvermine Guild, Sculptors Guild of NYC and NAWA. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in permanent collections. She has also created work for Broadway productions including The Lion King. Mauro began her career as a studio assistant to figurative sculptor Richard McDermott Miller and now works from her wooded studio in Connecticut.
Joanne Pagano Weber
Joanne Pagano Weber is a visual artist, writer and performer whose work spans painting, sculpture, drawing, text and performance. She wrote the narrative accompanying Corporal 199 and contributes text and visual art to the long standing collaborative project Beware of the Year 7000. Her work often explores social and political themes.
