In The Virgin, I combine mythological archetypes of women by using art historical imagery of Venus, Medusa, and the virgin Mary. Women are expected to be simultaneously beautiful, mothers, and virgins, and being in a state of suffering and mourning is seen as a positive attribute. These ancient, unattainable standards are still responsible for the persecution women face today.
