In this body of work, I was interested in exploring transhumanism, post-humanistic ideas and concepts, and the reciprocation between them and the state of being human. Images of branches, foliage, sky, and water shift gradually through the composition, moving from the dense textures of the forest toward expanses of blue and reflected light. The repeated squares create rhythm while the transparent mesh allows the work to float slightly from the wall, incorporating shadow and space into the composition. The delicate, organic forms of Yoshida’s image led me to think about the sea horse as a remarkable symbol of parenthood, particularly because in nature the male sea horse carries and gives birth to its young. This idea became connected in my mind with a video work depicting a man giving birth. The unexpected reversal of the traditional image of birth opened a larger reflection on what it means to be a parent and on how deeply our understanding of motherhood and fatherhood is shaped by culture, biology, and social expectations. The circles, overlapping forms, fragmented imagery, and intense colors in Ohh… Father suggest cycles of life, connection, protection, memory, and transformation. The composition moves between masculine and feminine forms, deliberately avoiding a fixed distinction between the two. At the center of the work is an acknowledgment of the extraordinary role of mothers in society. Motherhood is not only the biological act of giving birth. It encompasses care, protection, emotional labor, education, sacrifice, and the transmission of memory and values from one generation to another. Much of this work remains invisible, despite being fundamental to the formation of families and communities. The title Ohh… Father introduces a deliberate contradiction. It asks us to reconsider the boundaries we place around parental roles. Who gives life? Who nurtures? Who protects? Who carries the emotional weight of raising the next generation? Through this work, I am interested in parenthood as a shared human experience—one that can transcend conventional definitions of gender. I spent time in Japan in the Fall of 2024 and created a series of paintings when I returned. I didn’t see the connection right away, but when I look back at my photos from the trip, I understand. As other artists before me have said, I paint not what I see but what I feel. Infinite Connections reflects the feeling of the spectacular mountains, gardens and koi ponds of Hakone, the Golden Temple of Kyoto against the colors of Fall, a Geisha dancing in her blue flowered kimono, Mount Fuji against a brilliant blue sky. My paintings evolve intuitively as I process my experiences, and the story emerges through the layering of materials.
