Artist Statement
As the sun peaks over the horizon, the bus door shuts on a decrepit bus, a mother cradles her crying child, life is happening, the clock is ticking, and relationships are forming. Emotion, time, and experiences are being created with no rules but what has been before. The observation of these experiences, the energy carried within them, and the wealth of one's prior knowledge, while recognizing the effect on one's surroundings is what inspires me. My interpretation of these experiences is where I find myself in awe. My work aims to digest these interactions and break them down into their most raw states through form and color. While my work prevails as somewhat of a self-portrait, my hands speak the language of my eyes, creating a visual understanding of my thoughts and emotions. Each piece is a story I wish to tell a future child I may be so blessed to have one day. The stories I tell are ones of experiences I have observed revolving around the workings of the world. My observations are from reality unfolding around me. Some sad, some cheerful, some educational, and some dream-like. I am captivated by the small interactions in life that oftentimes go unnoticed. Interactions between strangers, loved ones, nature, and chaos. I find myself in awe comprehending and understanding how we all understand and digest these things. My comprehension of these things differs from yours, however, we all experience a similar life. What it means to me is far different from what it means to you. These experiences and thoughts have had such a large impact on my life and my way of thinking. It is where I find myself in an endless cycle of thought and creation. I believe so strongly in the passing of knowledge through generations. This process is the most beautiful form of wealth, the purest form of nurture, and the mark on the world I want to leave when I am gone. Bio: Marina Caspe (b. 2001, Nantucket, USA) specializes in crafting surreal figurative ceramic sculptures that explore a visual manifestation of ideas and experiences that captivate her. Through her work, she invites the viewer to investigate these ideas by creating relatable poses and forms to facilitate deeper engagement. Using a coil-building method she creates figures that take on a being of their own, each developing a unique persona and fostering an empathetic connection. Each work sources itself as a storytelling piece with the unique ability to create new conversations as well as remind the viewer of the past. Marina’s stories are ones collected through her unique experiences and observations of life, these stories are meant to be a collection of existence to remind us of the beauty within.
