In school it seems like the days last forever. Then they speed up. We look at the clock and see that another hour has elapsed, soon a day, then a year. We look again. It's 1:24. Though it seams early, the day will soon be over.
1:24 But We Wanted More Wanted more of what's in store Stop a while and recall longer days, ago Those endless drafts of Summer Stretched to far horizons Echoes of hours and more hours returning To bounce moments ever frosted by time As if persistence of memory were real The clocks would slow and time would Get sticky like taffy draped on naked roots Ants would chase their shadows in the cool afternoon Life ploding on, thank God, for now. And when we awake And when we know the moment slips We take our chalice to the waiting lip And drink the lot, thanking the air for time The clock says 1:24 and we want more. |
