"Desert Odalisque"
Acrylic and Ink on Canvas
16” x 20”
$1,100

When I had completed “Art’s Only Concern,” I realized that it needed a companion piece. Something that would echo it’s size and it’s intensity, but which would have a completely different feel. After returning from a hiking trip in southern Utah, having hiked canyons and bluffs in search of ancient imagery, I painted this piece in a short, hypomanic three weeks. This painting is much less complex, but it has a presence and a sensibility that in a contrary way matches it’s companion. “Art’s Only Concern” seems quite masculine to me, whereas “Desert Odalisque” feels very feminine. The female figure is noticeably evocative. I get the sense that I did not paint it—that it appeared without my willing it. And I love the juxtaposition of the female figure and the petroglyphic horse. Horses are often joined with a feminine character in myths and fairytales, and this couple is juxtaposed with two masculine figures in the other corners, which begin to emerge from a chaotic mishmash of energy soup.
