Diptych 1: Dance of the Infernal Regions, Us and Them
Oil on Canvas and Other Materials
50” x 90”
$6,667
These diptychs explore ancient initiation rituals once performed to “keep the dead warm” during
their journey through the cold abyss of the afterlife. The artist discovered that in the Svaneti region
of Georgia, a part of her ancestral homeland such traditions are still honored in the festival known
as Lamproba.

In Lamproba, villagers light tall birch or oak torches at family cemeteries, conducting prayers and
ceremonies at dusk to invoke warmth and remembrance for their ancestors.

“During the celebration, the members of wider families meet at the cemeteries by the graves of their
relatives. Here, they lit torches … offer prayers for their ancestors.” In these works, ancestral spirits
emerge from darkness into light, bodies become conduits for movement and memory.
