Gülnar Babayeva
Exhibition - Expressions in Every Form (2025)

About Gülnar BabayevaMy ceramic figure, portrait and fragment sculptures are created from a direct observation of live models or other available 3D resources, including self-observation. My ceramic vessel design and creation process is more organic in nature, where I deeply listen and respond to my material. In both instances, while sculpting a figurative work through direct observation, or vessel forms of imaginary realms, my process is often a collaboration between myself and my chosen material, clay. I create cold patina finishes on figurative works, utilizing various materials like metallic paints, acrylics, wax, as well as graphite. More traditional vessel forms are intentionally left raw on the surface, to display the beauty of the fired raw clay. However, works from the Celestial Vessels series utilize specialized glazes to achieve unique results on outer and inner surfaces. With my work, I hope to convey subtle reflections on the process of transformation as an evolving human being and creator. My figurative sculpture depicts subjects that represent the diversity of the human collective, not only on a physical level, but also on an emotional, mental and spiritual levels; and my vessel works are mostly contemplations on feelings and experiences a human being goes through. I do sense that some of my vessels resemble the inner dimensions of the human form, while my figures capture both the inner and the outer experiences of being human. I am inspired by classical & contemporary figurative sculpture and high quality design, as well as the nature of our reality and facets of consciousness. I find myself driven by continuous innate attempts to grasp, analyze and accept the variety of realities, perceived as private or collective, real or imaginary. Subjects that captivate my awareness are dreams & consciousness, human/animal & vessel forms, solitude vs. loneliness, healing practices, science-fiction & magic, open spaces and light, music and emotionally bonding experiences. I continuously look for ways to inspect and express those concepts through my artistic exploration and daily life. Featured Piece Exhibiting at Bank Art Gallery |
