About Ava KalozAs a young woman growing up in New York, my artwork reflects my outlook on life, demonstrating how I view and remember the world around me and what morals, values, and causes mean the most to me. By using abstract imagery to convey the colors and movements of the bustling world as I have experienced it at large, I choose to show the world through my eyes. In the pieces that use only bold colors and overlapping rounded blob-like imagery, I evoke a sense of play by asking my viewers to reminisce about their childhood and how they once viewed the world. In others, I use repetitive imagery to create not only the feeling of whimsy, but a hidden world of play as the imagery portrayed seeks to trick the eye of its beholder. Through this concept of play, I hope to show one of the values that I hold most dear to my craft, the concept of never leaving behind your truest self: the self that you were as a child. In addition to this theme, I also choose to depict various feminist imagery throughout my pieces, as I am a young woman growing up in the 21st century. It is through my experiences and encounters as a woman, including those positive - such as finding the peace and encouragement by other women and men to continue my craft - and negative - including sexual harassment, catcalling, and the various emotions I have felt in encounters with men from the time I was a girl - that I have been able to voice my opinions about the cause reflecting the feminist movement. Feminism and female empowerment to me mean helping to uplift and encourage women to feel a sense of comfort and strength within their own skin, by feeling validated for the emotions that they have felt and the experiences that they have had. Within my artwork, I have chosen to work towards a world that validates the female experience by showing imagery that seeks to support and encourage women by advocating for them as a part of their own community. It is in knowing that you are not alone that women will be able to one day truly end discrimination of sex differences. My work, though vast in meaning and interpretation, stands to show who I am as an artist. Never having been keen on making self-portraits, it is through the woven tapestry of my portfolio that I hope viewers can understand who I am as an artist. I am a child at heart, but a woman in body and soul. Featured Piece Exhibiting at Bank Art Gallery |
